November 19, 2016 - Walking the Walls

Starting today we have seven port days in a row. If I am going to get anything posted, I am going to have to keep my posts short and sweet. Here is the short version for today. We arrived in Dubrovnik and met our fabulous guide Steven/Stefan/Stjepan. He took us to the Old Town (where he grew up!), and we had a great time wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets and learning about the 1991-92 conflict.

The patron saint of Dubrovnik is Saint Blaise. You see him everywhere. He is always holding a scale model of the Old Town. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We decided to walk the city wall rather than drive to Cavtat, so Stjepan took us up onto the wall and told us about life in Dubrovnik. There are 500-600 steps on the wall walk and it is about 1.25 miles around. If you like to take photos of tiled roofs, you will think you have died and gone to heaven. You might notice that most of the roofs have been replaced recently. In the 1991 Siege of Dubrovnik the shelling caused a lot of damage to the Old Town.

In the Sponza Palace we saw the Memorial Room of Dubrovnik Defenders. The photos of the people killed in the 1991 fighting made it so much more real.We finished our excellent tour with a drive up to Srdj Hill for a panoramic view. We could even see Bosnia and Herzegovina from up there.
Many scenes from "Game of Thrones" and the newest Star Wars movie were filmed here and if I knew anything about the Game of Thrones series I'd be able to show you some cool pictures of places you would recognize (if you knew anything about it).

Back on the ship we had a nice dinner and then saw a "piano showman" named Chris Hamilton. He was pretty good. I especially liked the medley he performed, consisting of songs called out by members of the audience.

  1. Love it! Just FYI - all the photos following your comment, "We decided to walk the city wall rather than drive to Cavtat, so Stjepan took us up onto the wall and told us about life in Dubrovnik. There are 500-600 steps on the wall walk and it is about 1.2 miles around. If you like to take photos of tiled roofs, you will think you have died and gone to heaven." - are coming up blank. This was true on my email, on my phone AND on my computer.

I know you've been having problems with the program you're using, so I wanted to let you know. Even these short-ish posts are WONDERFUL!!
